Astrid Leeson

Artist Biography

I work in a variety of media to explore notions of history, our connections to and our sense of place.I explore the narrative of the environments, capturing marks and hints of their stories, generally, in oil on canvas. For me, mapping is a form of recording the layers of history thathave possibly been dismissed as worthless. Often these are the last remaining, undervalued traces of human activities, of previous stories and previous adventures, realor imagined.Further conversations are developed and the layers of history of those seeminglyinsignificant places becomes visible. connections are made, stories are created and theeveryday is noticed “Giving the mundane its beautiful due” (John Updike)
