The University of Edinburgh - BA (hons) Painting (2016-2020)
Within my painting practice I explore texture, surface and colour whilst investigating the feeling of being in a vast, expanded landscape. I have been examining the juxtaposition of the epic outdoors with elements of the cosy domestic through the use of stitching and soft material. Despite the ‘indoors’ and ‘outdoors’ being seen as dichotomous, they share the same ability to evoke feelings of longing, nostalgia and memory. This simultaneous tension and harmony brings a romanticised quality to the experience of the landscape – the choice of materials as well as colours aim to bring a sense of warmth and familiarity to the work.
Dominika is a recent graduate from Edinburgh College of Art where she spent half her time in the studio and the other half in a theatre. With both parents being first-generation immigrants and being born in London, the exposure to a multitude of landscapes and cultures has always been at the center of her experience. The familiarity that came with colourful traditions and the theatricality of the stage is what has always centered Dominika’s practice in colour and the experience of our surroundings.
