James Castle

Artist Biography

James Castle was born in 1946, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was educated at Ealing School of Art, Winchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. As well as exhibiting throughout the United Kingdom, James has curated exhibitions of sculpture, most notably at Gloucester Cathedral and Malmesbury Abbey. He was also a senior lecturer in Sculpture and Fine Art at the University of Gloucestershire. James was elected an Associate Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 2005, and in 2008 was elected as a Royal Scottish Academician. "My work lies in a space between sleep and wakefulness, memory and the present. Still, often slow lingering forms provide a resting place for thoughts and experiences, some actual others dreamed. Working within a traditional sculptural language, mainly in painted wood and bronze, I draw inspiration from a wide range of sources including Egyptian and Pictish Art, Surrealism and my Scottish heritage.
