Sarah Knox

Artist Biography

Immerse yourself in Sarah’s exquisite watercolours and oil paintings. Based in Edinburgh, Sarah is renowned for her evocative paintings of the Scottish landscape which capture a feeling of lost worlds through expressive atmosphere, light and colour.

Sarah’s process begins with the gentle application of pigment on textured watercolour paper, Arches paper or board which is placed flat, and this surface is loosely brushed. The first coats of paint pigment react with this ground, creating fluid pools of colour. Rather than work against these abstract forms, Sarah uses them so that landscape emerges through subsequent layers. Her paintings occupy a realm between an observed encounter and her memory of a place.

In this exhibition, Sarah has found inspiration on the beaches at Tentsmuir, Ullapool, and the East Neuk, as well as memories of the alps. Sarah’s paintings reflect the changing light, the nuances of cloud, the effect of sun on water and of mists rolling in over mountains. These paintings are part-remembered places with hints of human presence and capture the visually poetic.

Marrying oil paint’s depth of hue with watercolour-style fluidity, SarahKnox’s impressionistic paintings and prints gorgeously conjure coastal and mountain vistas The Scotsman

Sarah trained in Fine Art and English at University of Exeter, with her post-grad at the University of London. As a former art teacher, TV researcher and Fruitmarket Gallery education manager, she is now able to concentrate on her career as an artist. She exhibits widely and currently has a solo show called ‘Lost Worlds’ at Dawyck Botanic Gardens in theBorders until 30 November. Her work is represented in several public collections, and this year she was honoured to be one of a select group of artists representing Scotland at the international Fabriano in Aquarello watercolour exhibition in Italy.
