Practice Statement:
Remi Jablecki is an artist, barista, and art worker based in Edinburgh. His work is experience-led and celebrates transformation, labour, and the observation of non-human growth. With a critical approach to his Polish heritage, his inquiries take on otherworldly and abstract forms, exploring themes of nature, existence, memory, and gay identity. He harnesses personal secrets and labour to highlight experiences and perspectives that are often marginalised and excluded from representation. Recent projects have included large-scale paintings and installations that respond to the ecologies of allotments and personal growth in Edinburgh. Remi uses potatoes as a metaphor for relentless life and transformation within the confines of the closet, drawing attention to non-human life. As his practices evolve from the comfort of institutional settings to the working-class world, Remi discovers new ways to collect, forage, and spend time on local field trips. He incorporates experiences from hospitality and social care to enrich his artistic processes and methodologies. This approach fosters dialogue between his various roles, leading to unconventional material choices, inspirations drawn from community work, and conversations with chefs, ultimately creating more sustainable and direct responses. Currently, he is focused on making and creating objects from paper and foraged or collected materials, which take on fragile, sharp, and challenging forms
