Pauline Cumming

Artist Statement
As a painter who makes ceramics, my hand-rolled earthenware plates are intimate little canvases for my stories about women. I often depict strong females, inspired by classical paintings, and explore themes of women's life experiences including domesticity, motherhood and menopause.

I love the juxtaposition of the historical female, circumventing her traditional role of muse or object of beauty, to bellow out a feminist message of empowerment and sisterhood. I hope my work resonates with those who enjoy my candid humour and empathetic view of women and their experiences.

I spent six years living in the Netherlands and my colour palette of strong cobalt blue is a direct influence of Delftware. I return regularly to stock up on the delftsblauw underglaze that is a trademark of my work.
