Edgelands: Cate Inglis / James Sinfield / Bronwen Sleigh / Rowena Brown

27 May - 1 July 2023

In our fourth show of 2023 we take you to the Edgelands, to the outskirts of urban civilisation where forgotten spaces and buildings and stark architectural forms create an intriguing, often barren landscape.

In this transitional zone between the urban and the rural, in these forgotten spaces where the ghosts of once used or unloved buildings stand, our four contributing artists find beauty.

James Sinfield’s wonderful paintings are created through a process of applying and scraping back layers of paint echoing the repeated construction and decay of edgeland areas, and the addition of geometric architectural lines alludes to the forms of often brutalist-style buildings and spaces.

Bronwen Sleigh too takes inspiration from industrial buildings, exploring unused and forgotten urban environments and presenting these in an abstracted way through her beautiful prints and 3D structures.

Cate Inglis paints stunning realist works depicting dilapidated and unused urban buildings and spaces, bestowing them with a solemn grandeur and an importance which has sadly been lost through abandonment and neglect.

Rowena Brown is a ceramic artist who creates hand-carved clay sculptures of architectural forms often inspired by Hebridean croft houses which carry a sense of both abandonment and of shelter – each piece harbouring a story within it.

We are excited to share the incredible works of these four artists with you as we explore the unexpected beauty found within the Edgelands.
